Difficulty with using VirtualBox Starter

It's doubtless that I'm doing something stupid, but I can't seem to get the VirtualBox Starter for VB3.08 to work.

I've downloaded Portable-VirtualBox_v3.0.8-Starter_v4.0.0-Win_all.exe and run it - it unpacked itself into a folder called Portable-VirtualBox.
I then run the file Portable-VirtualBox.exe in that folder. This brings up a dialog box in which I

- select all 4 options with tick-boxes
- select the location of my (already downloaded) VirtualBox-3.0.8-53140-Win.exe file

and then hit the "OK" button.

A splash window appears saying "Please wait, extract and/or compress"

I then wait :-)

And wait. And wait......and wait... for more than an hour. Nothing appears to happen.
I have checked and the Portable-Virtualbox.exe consumes a steady 1-2% CPU, and seems to result in NO disk activity.
I have left this running for more than an hour with no discernible progress.

The same thing happens if I allow the program to download the VirtualBox distribution itself - the download happens OK, I select the options, hit "OK" and wait. Again no progress observed for more than an hour.

I'm assuming I'm doing something wrong, but I really can't think what.

Vital Stats:
Windows XPSP3

Can anyone enlighten me as to what I may be doing wrong ?

BTW - thanks to everyone for their work on the Starter - I just wish I could use it.

Thanks,

Well, I don't know if this will hellp anyone, but I tried again with the Portable VirtualBox Starter - this time on a Vista system without PortableBox intalled.
I was able to run the Starter successfully, have it pick up executable and then run successfully. I don't know whether it was the change to Vista or not having VirtualBox already installed that made the difference.
If I get a chance I'll try again on a clean XP system and report back.

Anyway, thanks for the work that went into this - It's going to make my life that little bit easier.
