I have the same problem, & it has been this way for me since Portable-VirtualBox_v2.2.0

will run for days without problem, starting & stopping vms with no trouble, but attempting
to close & restart Portable-VirtualBox will most often result in the kernel driver error. The
only solution is to reboot the host, which always works. Some other way to clear the error
condition with the driver loading would be very helpful.

host is mostly winXPx64sp2, sometimes win7x64, same problem on either

TIA

Solution:

Do a completely new installation!

1.) Download Virtual Box Portable and extract it
2.) Download Virtual Box from the official website (newest version)

3.) Use this code:
G:\Downloads\VirtualBox-3.1.2-56127-Win.exe -extract -path G:\Downloads\123

4.) Extract this with UniversalExtractor for the special *.msi File
5.) copy the Files to:
...\VirtualBox Portable\app32

6.) New installation of the Virtual System

so it works for me!

I am having this exact problem, with this version Portable-VirtualBox_v3.1.4-Starter_v4.1.3-Win_all.exe , the proposed solution did not work for me.
